Scully

A freelance gig I did in my second year. The Bristol musician Martin Callingham contacted me to make an animated music video for his song Scully, and I worked on it at the same time as Messages from the Wild.

Initial style tests

Because I was doing this simultaneously with schoolwork, I knew the style of the video was going to be minimalistic, with loops of very slight movement. Luckily, the sound of the music was fitting to this kind of aesthetic. I showed Martin these gifs as an example, and he was very enthusiastic.

Animation - first pass

Because of the song’s shortness and the limited style of the animation, I could easily work on the whole project in one file, and this was one of the updates I sent Martin to check in with him about my progress. I was given free rein on the visuals, and I decided on a melancholy scene exploring the relationship of two anonymous characters. I wanted to subtly portray queer relationships, and the blurry line that can form between friendship and romance, and the safety found in not daring to speak about one’s feelings out loud.  I also felt a connection could be made with the urban landscape and the bits of nature which poke through the concrete, beautiful but fragile.
